I just started reading "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle... Trust me, it's not a novel I would have scooped up while browsing through Barnes & Noble with my Starbucks Venti non-fat Vanilla Latte. I much prefer fiction. You know... a love story, a family story or someone else's life to get lost in. BUT this book was given to me by a friend whom I admire very much. So, I thought, "Suck it up, Hobby, and give it a try."

I'm gritting my teeth through the somewhat laborious language of it now and still trudging. What I do know is that when a book makes me break out my pen to underline passages and makes me quickly dog-ear pages, it's going to make a STRONG impact in my life.

Here's the first section that had me frantically digging through my oversized hand bag for a pen swimming in the bottom (in a coach seat on an airplane, no less.)

"Whenever tragic loss occurs, you either resist or you yield. Some people become bitter or deeply resentful; others become compassionate, wise and loving. Yielding means inner acceptance of what is. You are open to life. Resistance is an inner contraction, a hardening of the shell of the ego. You are closed. Whatever action you take in a state of inner resistance (which we could also call negativity) will create more outer resistance, and the universe will not be on your side. Life will not be helpful. If the shutters are closed, the sunlight cannot come in. When you yield internally, when you surrender, a new dimension of consciousness opens up. If action is possible or necessary, your action will be in alignment with the whole and supported by creative intelligence, the unconditioned consciousness which in a state of inner openness you become one with. Circumstances and people then become helpful, cooperative. Coincidences happen. If no action is possible, you rest in the peace and inner stillness that come with surrender. You rest in God."

Yeah, I know... chew on THAT for a minute. I am still mulling it over. I love this and want to keep it close and remember it always. Maybe I should get another Venti Latte!

Good book and when times are tough, I always remember the timeless saying.. "even this shall pass"..

Life is transient.

Heal well Jenn.

A most excellent book!!! I have it on CD so I can absorb more of it. Thick reading, takes me three or four times to BEGIN to get it.

I suggested this book to Bert & Stacey in an email recently. Though it seems difficult to get through at some points, this book can change your life. It seems like we all take what we need from because I barely remember this quote, but other parts spoke so profoundly to me...I do not view life the same since reading it.

I love this book!!!! I always knew that there was more to life than this. I was always serching and looking. Then I picked up this book and it answered many questions for me. About love, peace, finance and life situations.

Tyler Perry, said something about " resistiance" to you recently...It just made me realize again to live iin the "NOW".

Re: A New Earth

I also LOVED this book (and power of now and Stillness speaks are 2 other good ones by him). All with the same message.... the way he writes and explains life in general just makes so much sense. The book truly impacted my life and helped me to deal with a tough time in my life and to accept it for what it was. I feel like my selfawareness tripled after reading the book- which has helped me to make a lot more sense of my life.

I actually took notes as I was reading the book too and go back and reread them every so often to remind myself of what I learned... to live life nonattached, nonjudgmental, and nonresistant and to truly live moment by moment...

Re: A New Earth

I have read his books and it has changed the way I view myself. Oprah has had The author on her show. On her website she has multiple 90 min interviews, 1 for each chapter with Eckhart Tolle.
Amazing!

Hey Jenn,
I just heard on the radio that you are a Christian so perhaps this article will give you a different perspective on "A New Earth"...I, too, bought the book before I discovered what is presents conflicts with Christian teachings...
Unfortunately, its just another new age junkie....
Regards,
Magda
p.s.I love Jesus too:)
