Georgia Tech has asked their students to wear white to create a "white-out" for the game tonight against Miami.

But some students are not on board with the concept according to the AJC. Some even say that they'll be surprised if 50% of students show up wearing white.

Reason's GA Tech Alumni have found for not wearing all white:

  • Those who don’t own white Tech gear don’t want to buy something just to wear to one game.
  • It will be too cold to wear just a sweatshirt, a problem for those who don’t own white jackets. Temperatures are expected to be in the 30s by the end of the game.
  • They say it’s gimmicky and, if Tech loses, the school will look foolish.
  • They don’t want to appear as if they’re copying Georgia, which has had three blackouts since last year.

Re: White Out...

Oh I went to PSU! There is nothing like being at a white out game! No one else can do it :) Even when other schools do other things like "black outs" or "brown outs" it just isn't the same!

Re: White Out...

I love The Bert Show, but I feel like you guys don't give my school a fair shot. Georgia Tech is a wonderful school with an active alumni network in Atlanta.

Here are some interesting GT facts:
- 2007 Undergraduate rankings moved GT to number seven among public universities in the country
- In 2007, the average starting salary for a Georgia Tech graduate was over $48,000
- The Alumni giving rate is first among all public universities and 18th overall
- Georgia Tech has won four National Championships in Football
- Tech was the first major state university in the deep South to desegregate without a court order
- In 2007 the Tech Promise was initiated to assist all qualified Georgia students, whose families have an annual
income of less than $30,000, attain a debt-free education at Georgia Tech
- Coach John Heisman led Georgia Tech to win the most lopsided game in the history of college football (222-0)

Re: White Out...

Wow, I wish I had seen this sooner. I hate that the article that spawned this blog was read on the air, because it was an absolute disaster of a column. The White Out at Bobby Dodd Stadium turned out pretty well for a one-shot event at Georgia Tech on a Thursday night. The AJC's article was very, very poorly written and took the statements of a very select few (one) Tech fans and pretended that they belonged to the majority. Most Tech fans that knew about the event were excited about it and participated.

This was a first time thing for Tech and we pulled it off pretty well for something that not everyone knew about in advance and on a night in which it was hard for people to have time to rush home and change before heading to the game. Penn State's whiteouts are a rather constant occurrence.

The name of the man who was quoted in the AJC's story was "Yetman" which has actually become a joking insult among Tech fans. Anyone with a pessimistic or negative attitude is typically referred to by the name.
